Russia’s Anti-LGBT Legislation

Vladimir Putin and Russia’s lower half of parliament passed the Human Values Bill which is against "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations."

The intense, majoritarian support for the anti-LGBT ruling is rumored to have spawned from Putin’s close ties to the Russian Orthodox Church.  Although, he continues to deny such accusations, and has stated there is "no anti-gay discrimination in Russia and backs that claim up by openly blaming Russia’s declining birth rate on…homosexuals."

The law passed in a 436 favor, 0 opposed vote, and “imposes significant fines of up to $31,000 for providing information about the LGBT community to minors, holding gay pride events, speaking in defense of gay rights, or equating gay and heterosexual relationships."

The country’s LGBT community is being silenced, physically & verbally attacked, and even arrested by Russian police for their sexuality and for protesting their government’s newly-adopted, restrictive legislation against their human rights.

Hate crimes are becoming a regular, daily occurrence.
